GWINNETT County (CBS46) – Residents of Gwinnett County now have the chance to visit a state-of-the-art public library.
Officials attended the opening of a new 22,000 square foot library in Duluth on Wednesday.
The newly built branch is twice the size of the library it replaces, it includes two learning labs with areas for sewing, crafting, 3D printing, and coding. There are also 30 computer stations for adults, six computer stations for children and a meeting room that can accommodate 120 people.
“Our vision is that Gwinnett is the preferred community where everyone can thrive,” said Chair of the Council of Commissioners Nicole Hendrickson. “With access to educational resources and activities in fields ranging from crafts to STEAM, facilities like this help our residents learn new skills and develop their minds. “
The $ 5.1 library was built using funds from the sales tax on local special-purpose options.
“I would like to thank our partners in the Library and City of Duluth for their continued support and cooperation as we made this space a reality,” said District 1 Commissioner Kirkland Carden. “This project is a great example of what can be achieved when county and cities come together for the benefit of our residents. “
Located at 3180 Main Street, Duluth, the new facility has access to Buford Highway and was designed to complement the downtown aesthetic, a spokesperson said.
“The Town of Duluth is excited to add this new convenience to our downtown area,” said Duluth Mayor Nancy Harris. “With the location within walking distance of two schools, in addition to being close to a variety of housing options, we are sure it will be an active and vibrant community space. “
Dr Wandy Taylor, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Gwinnett County Public Library, praised the progress Gwinnett County has made over the past two decades, with a particular focus on the library system.
“We can become a beacon of light for others to follow,” said Dr. Taylor. “This new building is the symbol of that.
The branch opened to the public on Wednesday.
